User-reported bug

A defect found by someone using the product rather than by a test, a monitor, or an engineer.

User-reported bugs cluster in the places automated checks are weakest: unusual browsers and devices, real-world data shapes, accessibility failures, and workflows that are technically functional but confusing.

They arrive with a signal a monitor cannot provide — someone cared enough to stop and tell you — and with a liability a monitor does not have: the description is in a human's words, from memory, minutes after the fact.

The design goal is to shorten the distance between noticing and reporting. Every extra step — find the contact page, open an email client, describe which page you were on — loses reports, and it loses the most useful ones first, because busy people give up soonest.

Why it matters

For most sites, users are the highest-coverage test suite in production. The only question is whether reporting is easy enough that they bother.
